1. Diving and Snorkeling
It is often said that half of Roatan’s beauty is hidden below the surface, which is accurate. Once you look beneath the water, you will see a completely different environment. The marine life here is well-preserved, and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef—the second largest in the world—has a lot to offer even to experienced divers.
TIP: Choose a hotel that operates its own dive shop. They will provide you with the necessary gear and, more importantly, local advice on which specific sites best match your experience level.
2. Jungle and Nature
The island’s nature is equally interesting inland. A large part of Roatan is covered by jungle, where you can observe orchids, local spices, various tropical trees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
A good place to visit is Carambola Gardens, where you can hike to the summit. From the top, there is a clear view of the surrounding jungle. The trail is not demanding, and even six-year-old children can manage the walk.
3. Mangrove Forests
Mangrove forests are an important part of the coastal ecosystem. These areas serve as a natural shelter for young fish, shrimp, and birds.
The tree roots form dense tangles, creating narrow water channels where there is often only enough room for a single boat. We recommend a boat tour near the town of Jonesville. You will navigate through the water channels and listen to stories from Captain Marvin about the history of the area and the pirates who used these hidden paths for concealment.
TIP: Take a swimsuit with you. During the tour, there is an opportunity to swim in a lagoon with clear water.
4. Punta Gorda
On the way back from Jonesville, you can stop in Punta Gorda, the oldest permanently inhabited part of the island. The local Garifuna community settled here in 1797 and still maintains its original traditions.
TIP: It is best to visit on a Sunday when the town is more active. You can see traditional dances in the streets and try Machuca, a well-known local dish.
5. Beaches: Untouched and Tourist Localities
From Punta Gorda, you can continue to Camp Bay Beach. It is a quiet, natural beach where you will often find yourself alone, making it a good place for photography.
Another option is Havana Beach (also known as Beach Club Roatan), which features a small tropical islet located close to the shore.
The beaches in the Sandy Bay area are also worth mentioning. Most of them remain in their natural state, and the coral reef is accessible by swimming directly from the shore along the northern coast.
West Bay Beach is the most famous beach on the island. Although it is a main tourist hub, it remains visually appealing.
TIP: West Bay Beach is best visited around six o’clock in the morning. At this time, the beach is quiet with very few people, and the morning sun creates good light through the palm trees.
